Journalist expects Spurs to face ‘a lot of competition’ for 27-year-old target

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that David Raya would be a ‘great signing’ for Tottenham but warned the North London club that they could face a lot of competition for the Brentford star’s services.

Reports over the last couple of months have revealed that Tottenham are on the lookout for a goalkeeper who is good with the ball at his feet and one who can make smart decisions under pressure, with Raya thought to be one of the names on the North London club’s wishlist (Daily Mail).

The 27-year-old has grown in stature since Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League and was capped twice by Spain in 2022.

Raya’s current deal at the Brentford Community Stadium runs out in June 2024 and the goalkeeper revealed in an interview with The Athletic a few days ago that he had turned down two contract offers from the Bees, while expressing his intention to play European football.

O’Rourke believes that Raya would be a considerable upgrade on Hugo Lloris but suggested that a deal for the Spaniard will not be straightforward for the Lilywhites.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “We all know Hugo Lloris is coming to the end of his contract soon at Tottenham, and he’s not getting any younger, but he’s been a great servant to Tottenham, and he’s the club captain as well.

“So, it won’t be easy to see him possibly leave, but I think David Raya probably would be an upgrade on Lloris, on what he can offer to the team, and at his age, is probably coming into the peak of his powers as well.

“I think if Tottenham could sign him, it’d be a great signing, but it won’t be easy because they will have a lot of competition for his signature in the summer.”

The likes of David Raya and Jordan Pickford will be wanted men in the summer (if they do not sign new deals with Brentford and Everton respectively) as Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester United could all be in the market for a new number-one when the transfer window reopens.
