Journalist expects Tottenham to appeal Antonio Conte’s red card against Chelsea

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are expected to appeal the red card shown to Antonio Conte for his altercation with Thomas Tuchel.

There was no love lost between the managers during the 2-2 draw on Sunday and the tension boiled over when they shook each other’s hands after the final whistle.

Tuchel seemed to hold on to Conte’s hand and demanded that the Italian look him in the eye, as both received straight reds for squaring up for the second time in the game.

Gold has revealed that Spurs would not have been able to appeal the decision if Anthony Taylor had brandished a second yellow to Conte for the incident rather than a straight red.

He adds that Tottenham will ‘surely appeal’ the straight red as it seems too harsh a punishment for someone trying to remove their hand from another person’s grip.

The journalist explains that if Conte is given just a touchline ban rather than a stadium one, it would mean the 53-year-old could be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday to watch his side take on Wolves.

One can understand why Taylor gave a straight red card to both Conte and Tuchel as he did not see what led to the altercation.

Spurs will be hoping that they can at least get the punishment reduced to a touchline ban rather than a stadium one for Conte as the video clearly shows that Tuchel was the instigator.
