Journalist explains on-loan Tottenham man is ‘struggling’ due to fitness reasons

Journalist Mimmo Malfitano has revealed that Tanguy Ndombele is struggling to reach his full potential at Napoli owing to his lack of match fitness.

While Ndombele’s ability was never in doubt during his time at Spurs, the midfielder’s inability to play 90 minutes was a constant theme during his time in North London.

The Frenchman will be hoping to turn his career around in Naples, and despite having a difficult start to his loan spell at the club, the 25-year-old has been getting regular game time over recent weeks.

Calciomercato even reported a few days ago that Ndombele is winning Luciano Spalletti over with his recent displays and that the Serie A club will seriously consider activating the £25m option to buy the midfielder permanently if he keeps improving.

However, Malfitano has now said that despite the former Lyon man’s improvements, he is still short of the required fitness levels and Napoli fans have not been won over by the player yet.

The journalist told Area Napoli: “Ndombele has not yet expressed his full potential in Naples. The midfielder is struggling due to not yet being in optimal physical condition.

“I am reading you some messages that I am receiving these days. ‘Why don’t you go back to Tottenham? Go back to England’. Obviously, the Azzurri supporters are not satisfied with the performances of the midfielder.”

In Ndombele’s defence, he is not going to reach match fitness unless he continues to play regularly. The 25-year-old has received positive reviews for some of his recent performances, and he will be keen to prove himself over the coming months.
