Journalist explains what Mason has told Spurs players about permanent job

The Athletic journalist Charlie Eccelshare has revealed that Ryan Mason has been clear with the Tottenham squad that his ambition is to take over as the permanent head coach.

This is Mason’s second stint as interim head coach, with the former Spurs midfielder also being handed the reins two years ago after Jose Mourinho’s departure.

The 31-year-old is now arguably better prepared for the role than he was previously, having worked as part of Antonio Conte’s coaching staff for 15 months.

Mason has already admitted publicly that he feels he is ready to take on the role full-time (Daily Mail).

However, reports indicate that he is not one of the top candidates in consideration for the role, with Spurs said to be eyeing the likes of Julian Nageslamnn, Arne Slot, and Luis Enrique among others (Football Insider)

Alasdair Gold stated in his recent column for Football.London that Mason is unlikely to be considered for the full-time role since the appointment might be perceived as an ‘unambitious’ one by some.

Eccleshare believes that the interim Spurs head coach is certainly putting himself in the frame for the job by the way he has conducted himself.

The journalist said about Mason on The View From The Lane Podcast: “Well, he said in his first press conference that he wanted the job full-time, and he’s been clear with the players that is his ambition, and he’s not hiding from that. That’s been really striking.

“He’s taken it head-on. He started his press conference on Friday by congratulating the U18s for their win, the contrast between him and Conte couldn’t be greater.”

Mason has shown plenty of promising signs and I believe that he could evolve into a top coach. However, it would simply be too big a risk for Spurs to throw him in at the deep end.

The 31-year-old would likely have to prove himself at a lower level before he becomes a legitimate contender for the Tottenham job.
