Journalist explains why Ajax may claim to have paid less for Bergwijn than they actually have

Ajax will pay €32.5 million (£27.7m) for Steven Bergwijn but could report a lower figure as Tottenham still owe a payment for Davinson Sanchez, according to De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij.

The Dutch side are closing in on the capture of 24-year-old Bergwijn, who is set to pen a five-year deal after agreeing personal terms and completing a medical earlier this week (Fabrizio Romano).

Ajax chased the Netherlands international extensively during the January transfer window but were unable to strike a deal with Antonio Conte electing to keep him at Spurs for the rest of the last campaign (Football.London).

While Spurs will pocket more than £27m for a winger who scored just eight goals in two-and-a-half seasons, the latest claims indicates there are some minor details that could change the way the deal is reported.

Dutch journalist Verweij states Ajax could report the transfer as being worth €30m (£25.6m) by discounting a small fee owed by Tottenham for defender Sanchez.

Spurs signed the Colombia international almost five years ago, however, it is explained they still need to pay €7m (£5.9m) for his services.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is quite interesting as Tottenham’s move to sign Sanchez happened almost five years ago, but this is how instalments work in the present day.

Either way, they will be receiving a healthy amount for a forward that struggled throughout his time at the club which is always a big positive.
