Journalist explains why Bergvall’s arrival signals the start of ‘exciting time’ at Spurs

Journalist Dean Jones has opined that Tottenham have shown by beating Barcelona to the signature of Lucas Bergvall that they are likely to be serious contenders for the best young talent in European football over the next couple of years.

Spurs have had plenty of success in their strategy of securing young, up-and-coming talent, with Ange Postecoglou evidently being adept at creating the right environment for those players to thrive.

Tottenham thus look set to continue to persevere with the same recruitment strategy, with Bergvall being the latest young gun to arrive at Hotspur Way during deadline day in January.

While it has been well documented that Spurs stole the midfielder from under the noses of Barcelona (Matteo Moretto), it had also been widely reported back in Sweden that a whole host of other clubs also made moves for the 18-year-old in January, including Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan (Expressen).

Bayern also lost out to the Lilywhites in their pursuit of Radu Dragusin last month, with the Romanian admitting that he turned down the Bavarians’ offer since he saw Tottenham as the right step to make at this stage of his career (Independent).

Tottenham are building a youthful team in N17

Jones believes that Spurs have signalled with these transfer moves that they are the ones to watch out for in the race for budding youngsters around Europe.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “We know that they’ve been targeting players of a younger profile for future years. There was a couple that they looked at in the last transfer window.

“There were obviously links to Antonio Nusa and Adam Wharton. They’re looking at Emerson at Atalanta as well, as players that they think can make a difference in the future.

“Bergvall wasn’t really mentioned among those names, but clearly, they’ve worked hard to get this deal done. It kind of makes you feel like anything is possible from here on because if they’re managing to grab players under the noses of Barcelona, then they can do it to anybody else as well. It’s a really exciting time.”

Given the kind of team that Postecoglou is now building at Hotspur Way and the freedom that the Australian gives young players to express themselves, it comes as no surprise that many youngsters now see Spurs as being the ideal platform for them to fulfil their potential.
