Journalist explains why Spurs felt the need to make Nagelsmann statement

Journalist Simon Stone has written in his column for BBC Sport that Tottenham felt the need to correct the rumours that had been intensifying about their interest in Julian Nagelsmann.

It emerged on Friday afternoon that Spurs had ended their interest in Nagelsmanna as the North London club did not see him as a good fit for the role at the moment (Evening Standard).

Since then, there have been contradictory claims regarding the reason behind the development, with SportBild revealing that Spurs had doubts about making a move for German so soon after his exit from Bayern Munich.

The publication also explained that the 35-year-old would now have to build an entirely new team as none of his backroom staff are likely to follow him to his next club.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail have claimed that it was actually Nagelsmann who turned down the chance to take over at Tottenham since he was not convinced about the direction the club want to take this summer.

Stone has now explained in his latest column that Spurs were noticing the fact that the speculation over their interest in Nageslmann was building up.

The journalist revealed that the club felt they had to do something to correct the rumours or risk looking like they had missed out on someone they weren’t actually chasing.

Given the uncertainty and chaos at Hotspur Way at the moment, Stone revealed that the club were keen to avoid a false narrative about missing out on a top target.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is impossible to know what the truth is here but it is certainly plausible that Tottenham were not overly keen on Nagelsmann.

Multiple sources have reported over recent weeks that the club continue to maintain that there is no one top candidate for the role as things stand.

It might simply be the case that Spurs want to get a director of football through the door before making a decision on which head coach to hire.
