Journalist explains why Spurs may struggle to sign £15m-rated centre-back

Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur will not find it straightforward to secure the services of Jonathan Tah as Bayer Leverkusen are determined not to weaken their squad in January.

It has been widely reported over the last two months that signing a centre-back is Ange Postecoglou’s number one priority in January, with a whole host of names mooted as targets for the North London club (GiveMeSport).

Tah is one of those names, with Kicker revealing last week that Spurs are monitoring the experienced defender closely ahead of January.

The outlet suggested that the 27-year-old has a release clause of €18m (£15.4m) in his contract and added that the German international was aware of interest from England and was keen to make a move to the Premier League.

Deal for Tah expected to be difficult

Jacobs has now also stated that Tah is indeed one of the options on Tottenham’s wishlist but he suggested that it will be hard for the Lilywhites to poach the centre-back from the Bay Arena next month.

The journalist told The Debrief: “Tottenham need to move quickly to find depth. Jonathan Tah from Leverkusen is one name on the list, Tottenham have also looked at Piero Hincapie too in the past.

“It’s so hard to buy a player from Leverkusen in January because they’re flying and these guys are enjoying life under Xabi Alonso. Leverkusen’s strategy is to lose just two of their star names over the next two transfer windows.”

Earlier today Fabrizio Romano claimed that Spurs have opened talks with Nice for Jean-Clair Todibo as a potential defensive recruitment next month.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Spurs would have much success in their rumoured pursuits of Tah or Piero Hincapie as Leverkusen would not want to do anything that would jeopardise their title challenge, with Xabi Alonso’s men still going strong in the Bundesliga.
