Journalist feels ‘sorry’ for one Spurs defender and says another ‘has never been good enough’

The Daily Star reporter Ryan Taylor has admitted that he feels sorry for Japhet Tanganga, given how the defender’s progress has been halted over recent years.

There was plenty of optimism around Tanganga when he first broke into Tottenham’s first team under Jose Mourinho back in 2020.

However, a combination of injuries and managerial upheavals at Spurs has meant that the Spurs academy graduate has not been able to get consistent game time for the past three years.

The 23-year-old has understandably struggled when he has been thrown straight into the deep end by Antonio Conte, most recently in the 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Leicester City, where he started at right centre-back due to Cristian Romero’s suspension.

Conte came under criticism for starting Tanganga over the more experienced Davinson Sanchez at the King Power Stadium (talkSPORT) but Taylor believes that the Colombian has simply never been good enough for Spurs.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Davinson Sanchez has never been good enough. Japhet Tanganga, I feel sorry for him because he’s not had a run of games, his progression was really halted”.

Some fans and pundits seem to inexplicably write players off on the back of one or two performances after a long spell out of the team, which I find quite infuriating. That was the case with Oliver Skipp last month too.

The reality is that most players, particularly youngsters, need a run of consecutive starts to build up some confidence and showcase their skillset.
