Journalist gives opinion on Tottenham’s stance on Max Aarons and Thomas Meunier

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold believes that Tottenham have still not given up their chase of Max Aarons but has suggested that they might settle for Thomas Meunier depending on other variables like player sales.

Aarons has been linked with a move to North London for a couple of months with Football Insider reporting at the start of April that Spurs had made the Norwich defender one of their top targets this summer.

The rumours linking Spurs with a move for Meunier have intensified over recent weeks with Sport (via Sport Witness) reporting recently that the experienced full-back could agree on a move to North London when his contract at PSG runs out this summer.

Reports have suggested that Jose Mourinho has personally contacted both Aarons (Soccer Link) and Meunier (ESPN) over the possibility of linking up with him in North London next season.

Gold believes that the club do not want to miss out on signing the Belgian international on a free transfer but suggests that a move for Aarons is still a possibility.

When asked about Tottenham’s potential move for Meunier in a Q and A on his Youtube channel, Gold said: “Spurs obviously could do with another right-back. I don’t think Kyle Walker-Peters, unless he really develops [is going to break into the team].

“If there is a resumption of the Premier League, I would imagine he will go back out on loan next season. So another right-back is needed.

“Free transfers for a guy that’s 28, Meunier who ironically pushed Serge Aurier out of the first-team at PSG – It is a deal that makes sense. I would not be as confident on that one as I would be on Willian.

“I still think they’ll look very closely at Max Aarons. A lot will depend on if they can get funds selling other players.

“We’re talking about £30 million but if Norwich were to get relegated, then you are looking at a team who would accept slightly less money. So I wouldn’t rule out Aarons completely.”

My gut feeling is that we will try to get Meunier and Willian on free transfers and spend most of our budget on a striker and a defensive midfielder.
