Journalist hints club may sell player to Saudi Pro League just one year after Spurs exit

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has revealed that Ajax are hoping to offload former Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn in January.

There was some disappointment among sections of the Spurs fan base when Bergwijn left the club in the summer of 2022 as there was a feeling that the Dutchman had not got as many opportunities as he deserved, particularly under Antonio Conte.

The 26-year-old had an impressive start to life at the Johan Cruyff Arena and it seemed like the €31.25m (£26.8m) Ajax paid for him was well worth it but his form tailed off towards the end of last season.

The Netherlands international has been in and out of the starting eleven so far this campaign, having found the back of the net three times in eight appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Where did it all go wrong for Steven Bergwijn?

Driessen has now indicated that Ajax are hoping to offload the former Spurs man to a Saudi Pro League side in January.

The journalist told Voetbal Zone (as translated by Sport Witness): “The important thing is that he (new general manager Alex Kroes) is going to release a number of players, because there is so much rubbish going on there.

“For example, Bergwijn, who was already in the interest of Saudi clubs in the summer. So, if you get €40m for that..”

While the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, and even to some extent, Pedro Porro, have proven Conte wrong, the Italian’s reluctance to trust Bergwijn and to offload him has been completely vindicated, even though the move did not appear to make sense at the time.
