Journalist hints Spurs could knock on door for midfielder in January

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Leicester City’s James Maddison during the January transfer window.

Maddison was mooted as a target for Spurs during the summer transfer window, with Alasdair Gold saying on his YouTube channel back in August that the 25-year-old is a player some at the North London club admire.

However, Antonio Conte’s men failed to secure an attacking midfielder before the transfer deadline while Maddison ended up staying put at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester have made a poor start to the season, and are currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

Football Insider reported this week that Maddison, whose current contract with the Foxes runs until 2024, would ‘jump at the chance’ to join Spurs if the club came back in for him.

Jones has now said that he wouldn’t be surprised if Antonio Conte’s men pursue the England international when the transfer window reopens, especially if Leicester’s struggles continue.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “They’ve (Leicester) got a big game on Monday and they’ll be looking to turn around their season. If they can’t do that, then I think there’ll be a few clubs, probably including Tottenham, knocking on the door in January.”

Given Leicester’s financial position, one would normally assume that they would be open to selling Maddison in January if the player does not show a willingness to sign a new contract.

However, given that the Foxes appear to be in very real danger of going down, they might decide to hang on to the attacking midfielder until the end of the season as relegation would prove extremely expensive.
