Journalist hints that 26-year-old Spurs man is about to sign new contract

Tottenham Hotspur are currently in negotiations with Eric Dier over a new contract, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has hinted.

Dier is currently one of the longest-serving members of the Tottenham first-team squad, having been one of the first players to be signed after Mauricio Pochettino arrived at the club in 2014.

Although he has arguably had more success playing in defensive midfield during his time in North London, the England international made it clear recently that he wants to play at centre-back moving forward (Evening Standard).

The 26-year-old has endured a mixed season, but now finds himself playing regularly under Jose Mourinho.

However his performance levels have arguably dropped since the turn of the year, and he has even been linked with a move away from Spurs  (90 min).

Romano has taken to social media to hint that Dier is now close to putting pen to paper with the club on a new deal.

I was expecting Dier to sign a new deal with us this summer and would have been extremely surprised to see Mourinho letting him go. I have no doubt that he can be a terrific centre-back once he gets a few games under his belt in the position. Even if he is to eventually leave, Spurs will want him on a big contract to demand a competitive fee.
