Journalist Dean Jones has said that the speculation linking Ben Godfrey with a move to Tottenham has a lot of merit, with the Lilywhites alleged to be looking at the Everton star closely.
Godfrey has fallen down Sean Dyche’s pecking order this season, having made just two appearances across all competitions so far.
Several sources have stated over the last few weeks that the 25-year-old is one of the centre-backs on Tottenham’s radar ahead of January (Football.London’s Alasdair Gold).
Last week, 90 min said that Spurs are now ready to make advances over a deal for the England international, with Everton ready to cash in on the player.
This update was also backed up by Football Insider a few days ago, with the outlet stating that the Toffees are willing to take a loss on the £20m fee they paid to sign the 25-year-old from Norwich City back in 2020.
Concrete interest in Ben Godfrey from Tottenham
Jones has now confirmed that the speculation is not just baseless and that Godfrey is ‘definitely’ of interest to Ange Postecoglou’s men.
When asked about the reports linking the Toffees star with a move to Tottenham, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “Yes, there is definitely truth to it. Ben Godfrey is looking for opportunities to move and Tottenham are certainly one of the clubs that are looking at that deal.
“I’d heard a while back that they were looking at Lloyd Kelly but that deal is so difficult to do now. Bournemouth don’t want to lose him first and foremost and secondly, it’s going to cost a lot now. Yeah, I just don’t think that Kelly one is going to happen.
“With that in mind, I think Godfrey does become more of an option. There are other possibilities here too and we have to consider that Tottenham are changing the model and the way that they look at signings. So I don’t think this is done or anything. But in terms of whether those rumours are true, I do believe them to be.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Godfrey would fit the bill as an understudy to Van de Ven and Romero. He is quick, decent on the ball, likely to be inexpensive and is homegrown. However, I would be surprised if the Everton star is Tottenham’s top centre-back target for January.
