Journalist ‘is not convinced’ that Spurs will be able to sign centre-back this summer

Journalist Dean Jones believes that rumoured Tottenham target Marc Guehi could decide to remain at Crystal Palace if the club show some ambition during this summer’s transfer window.

Despite being only 22 years of age, Guehi has already emerged as a leader in the Palace backline and it appears only a matter of time before the youngster established himself as a regular starter for England.

He is thought to be one of the names on Tottenham’s radar, with Football Transfers reporting back in March that the Lilywhites believe the Palace star is a perfect fit for the profile of defender they are looking for.

The report added that although Spurs are currently leading the race for the centre-back’s signature, they could face competition from Manchester United for the youngster.

The Daily Mail also subsequently backed up Tottenham’s interest in Guehi but added that their North London rivals Arsenal also have their eye on the player.

Despite being on the radar of some big clubs, Jones believes that the former Chelsea man could be convinced to stay at Selhurst Park as long as the Eagles retain their young core and make an ambitious managerial appointment.

When asked about Geuhi being linked with a move to Spurs, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I mean, I think he will be linked with clubs.

“I’m not convinced he’s going to leave. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with the manager and what path Crystal Palace go on here because he will need to see a certain level of ambition.

“But if Palace’s top young players hang around as well, like the attacking lads, then I think Guéhi will probably be willing to stick through it a little bit longer, too.

“But it’s going to be dependent on there being that excitement factor and knowing that it’s not going to be another season like this one.”

Guehi is contracted to Palace until 2026 and so the Eagles are under no pressure to sell the defender this summer.

Besides, if the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal also show interest in the 22-year-old, it could make life quite difficult for Spurs, given that we do not have Champions League football to offer.
