Journalist mentions Spurs as potential contenders to move for Matthijs de Ligt

Sky Italia journalist Luca Marchetti has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are one of the contenders to snap up Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

Spurs have been linked with a whole host of centre-backs over the past couple of months (Football.London) and the club now finally appear to be on the verge of signing one.

Reports over the last two days have indicated that the North London club have reached an agreement with Barcelona over a loan move for Clement Lenglet, with the option to make the deal permanent (90 min).

However, the Frenchman might not be the only centre-half that Spurs sign this summer, with reports indicating that Antonio Conte wants to make further additions to his backline (Football.London).

De Ligt’s future appears to be in the air, with the centre-back having just two years left on his contract at the Allianz Stadium (Transfermarkt).

Reports over recent days have indicated that Chelsea are keen on snapping up the Dutchman and ready to offer Timo Werner to Juve as a makeweight in the deal (Daily Mail).

Marchetti now explained that Juve and Chelsea do not see eye-to-eye on Werner’s valuation and added that Spurs could swoop for De Light.

When asked about the Blues’ pursuit of the centre-back, the journalist told Tuttomercatoweb: “Chelsea are a possible track, they have lost Rudiger and Christensen, they need two defenders.

“I do not exclude United, where there is ten Hag, who knows De Ligt well. And there is also Tottenham, however, looking for a left-footed central.

“Today I don’t know how much Juventus are thinking of selling him, the chat with Chelsea is not profitable.

“Werner, who from London would like to include as a counterpart, is not crazy and above all in Turin, they disagree on the evaluation of 70 million that Chelsea makes for the German.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think Lenglet’s impending arrival likely rules out a potential move for De Ligt, given that the Frenchman has likely been brought in as cover for both Eric Dier and Ben Davies.

If Spurs do sign one more centre-back, it is likely to be someone of Gleison Bremer’s profile to replace one either Davinson Sanchez or Japhet Tanganga.
