Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Antonio Conte wants Tottenham to prioritise signing a centre-back and a forward during the January transfer window.

Spurs bulked up their squad considerably during the summer by bringing seven new players through the door, including Destiny Udogie, who was loaned back to Udinese.

However, the Tottenham squad has been extremely stretched over the last month owing to some injuries, perhaps highlighting that more reinforcements are needed in order to compete with the very best.

The Evening Standard reported last month that Spurs are willing to loan out Bryan Gil, Pape Matar Sarr and Japhet Tanganga in January, with Conte said to have asked for direct, ready made replacements for all three players.

However, 90min suggested earlier this week that signing a right wing-back is a priority for the north London club in January.

Jones has now said that while he expects Spurs to be on the lookout for a right-back, a striker and a centre-back are at the top of the club’s wish list.

The journalist told GiveMeSport about Tottenham’s January plans: “The right-back situation always seems up in the air, so it would not be a surprise to see links. But I am told a forward and centre-back are going to be the most pressing matters for Conte in January.”

I expect Conte to prioritise a right centre-back to cover for Cristian Romero, a winger to cover for Dejan Kulusevski and perhaps an attacking midfielder who can give him more options if he uses a 3-5-2. There is no doubt that we do need a new right wing-back but I suspect that the club will only overhaul that position at the end of the season rather than in January.
