Journalist names two signings he thinks Tottenham need to make in January

Miguel Delaney has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur need to sign another attacker and a centre-back to give themselves a realistic chance of competing for a top-four finish this season.

If reports over the last few weeks are to be believed, Spurs are expected to be busy in January, with the Lilywhites alleged to be targeting multiple signings in the winter.

Various reports have stated that signing a centre-back and a defensive midfielder is at the top of the club’s agenda (Football Insider), with the likes of Lloyd Kelly, Trevor Chalobah and Marc Guehi thought to be among the central defenders on the North London club’s wishlist (GiveMeSport).

More recently, there have also been suggestions that Spurs will look to strengthen their wide areas after the injuries to Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic (Tribal Football), while other outlets have indicated that Ange Postecoglou’s men are also after a centre-forward to replace Harry Kane (Mirror).

David Ornstein revealed on a Q&A on The Athletic last week that Tottenham do not have much money to spend in January and will have to be ‘creative’ in the market.

Tottenham need a winger and a defender

Delaney believes that Spurs are in need of at least two additions, adding that the recent injury crisis has demonstrated their lack of depth.

The journalist wrote in The Independent: “Tottenham Hotspur’s injuries and suspensions from the Chelsea game have immediately exposed the lack of squad depth, which has given the club some cause for thought given how the campaign has gone so far.

“There is the real sense that they can get Champions League this season, which would be ahead of schedule, but that probably requires more depth.

“That means they will make at least one January transfer, but probably more. Ange Postecoglou could do with another wide player, but they clearly need another defender too.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Tottenham will sign a centre-back in January and I suspect that a wide-forward will also arrive through the door. Whether or not Spurs move for a midfielder would depend on Hojbjerg’s future, with the Dane looking likely to depart as things stand.
