According to Alex Crook, Shakhtar Donetsk may look to FIFA for compensation if they do end up losing Manor Solomon to Spurs on a free transfer.
It has been a busy summer already for Tottenham and new manager Ange Postecoglou, with the signings of Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison already confirmed.
The Lilywhites show no sign of slowing down and news broke over the weekend that an agreement was in place to sign Manor Solomon on a free transfer (Fabrizio Romano).
That deal does depend on FIFA approval, however. The 23-year-old is currently owned by Shakhtar Donetsk, but due to the ongoing conflict in the Ukraine, players are being given special dispensation to leave their contracts for free.
Tottenham may well benefit from this ruling, but there is a chance Shakhtar will push back.
Shakhtar Donetsk will want compensation
Speaking on talkSPORT, Alex Crook shared his thoughts on the matter and explained why Shakhtar may seek compensation.
He said: “It’s hard not to feel sorry for Shakhtar in this situation, I think they are going to speak to FIFA and try to get some compensation.
“His contract has come to an end but because of the war in Ukraine there was regulation brought in by FIFA which effectively allowed non-Ukrainian players to almost walk away from their contracts and therefore he went out on loan to Fulham, he was still a Shakhtar player.
“Now his contract has officially come to an end and Shakhtar’s argument is, under normal circumstances, they would have sold him a year ago for £30 or £40 million, and now a prized asset is walking out the door for nothing. It will be interesting to see how FIFA react to that.”
On the positives for Spurs, Crook added: “From a Tottenham perspective, I think this is a really shrewd signing.
“A player who proved himself in the Premier League and will fit into the way that Ange Postecoglou wants to play and it just gives them a little bit of extra squad depth as well.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It would only be fair for Shakhtar to receive some compensation for this deal.
I don’t know whether that comes from Spurs or FIFA themselves, but hopefully it all gets resolved quickly and we get our player through the door.
