Journalist predicts January ‘war’ between Spurs and Arsenal for PL player

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to battle it out with rivals Arsenal to make a January move for Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The Frenchman has fallen out of favour under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and has slipped down the pecking order at the club since the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Martial, 25, also flattered to deceive last season, scoring just four goals in the Premier League after coming off of a 17-goal campaign in 2019/20.

He was given a chance to shine in the Carabao Cup against West Ham in midweek but put in a tame performance as United suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Hammers at Old Trafford.

Martial’s future in Manchester is likely heading towards a crossroads, and it has now been reported that a move to either Spurs or Arsenal could be on the cards as early as January.

The North London sides are reportedly keeping tabs on his situation, and could both look to bolster their forward lines as a result.

Spurs failed to secure a partner or back-up for star striker Harry Kane over the summer, despite chasing Serie A forwards Lautaro Martinez and Dusan Vlahovic.

Arsenal, on the other hand, could see their French striker Alexandre Lacazette depart the club in January, which could open up a spot in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Martial made the move to United from Monaco in 2015 for a hefty sum of £58 million.

Martial’s form has seemingly just fallen off the cliff over the last year, which is odd considering how good he was during the restart of the Premier League in the summer of 2020.

It hasn’t improved this season and Ronaldo making a return certainly hasn’t helped his chances of changing that. United would likely demand a pretty big fee for him, though, as they are selling to a league rival. Ultimately, that may put Spurs off altogether.
