Journalist predicts midfielder would ‘jump at the chance’ to join Spurs this summer

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Pete O’Rourke has predicted that Jesse Lingard would be keen to join Tottenham this summer.

Lingard is now a free agent after his contract at Manchester United expired last month (TransferMarkt).

The 29-year-old struggled for game time under Ralf Ragnick last season, making only two Premier League starts for the Red Devils (TransferMarkt).

A 2020/21 loan move to West Ham United proved that Lingard could still cut it at the top level of English football, during which time he scored nine goals and provided five assists in just 16 appearances for the Hammers (TransferMarkt).

West Ham, as well as Newcastle United, failed in attempts to make deadline-day loan moves for the midfielder during the January transfer window (Sky Sports).

However, along with Everton, Lingard is said to be the subject of a tug-of-war between the aforementioned Premier League clubs this summer (Mirror).

The Telegraph have previously credited Spurs with an interest in Lingard, as Fabio Paratici looks to bring in more homegrown players whilst providing Antonio Conte with an attack-minded central midfield option.

O’Rourke believes that a move to Spurs would suit Lingard: “He’s maybe not top of their targets right now but if they’re not able to get other targets, there’s no reason to think Tottenham wouldn’t move for Jesse Lingard on a free.

“And I think that Jesse Lingard would jump at the chance of going to Spurs and playing Champions League football next season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Whilst I am not truly excited by the prospect of this transfer, I am not against it. The lack of a fee would preserve Spurs’ transfer budget, whilst it directly addresses the lack of homegrown players currently in Conte’s squad. Whether the Italian would want Lingard is another matter entirely.
