Journalist predicts ‘real possibility’ for Spurs to sell defender and buy replacement

Pete O’Rourke has claimed Sergio Reguilon could leave Tottenham this summer and secure a move back to Spain.

Reguilon is into his second season at Spurs since earning a £25 million transfer from Real Madrid in 2020 (Evening Standard), but has endured a mixed spell in North London.

After initially cementing the left-back spot as his own under former managers Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo, the 25-year-old has bounced in and out of the line-up since the arrival of Antonio Conte.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported last month that Reguilon, who Real still have a £33.7 million (€40m) buy-back clause for, has been ‘attracting a lot of interest’ despite his form with Barcelona one of a host of top European sides monitoring the situation.

And O’Rourke believes there is a ‘real possibility’ an exit from Spurs could be on the cards for Reguilon this summer, as he feels Conte could use a potential departure to bolster his left-sided options.

He told GiveMeSport: “There’s a real possibility that Reguilon could return to Spain this summer.

“Real Madrid have a buy-back clause and there’s interest from Barcelona, so I think Conte will be in the market for a left wing-back to try and improve the squad.”

It has been a mixed one for Reguilon at Spurs as he hasn’t really progressed into what many expected him to.

Injuries have hampered him at times, but his form while in the side has been lacking despite the high ceiling that he should have.

If Real do activate the clause this summer then there is nothing Spurs can do themselves, but if another offer comes in then they should definitely consider that.
