Journalist predicts Spurs could sign Lloris successor for £26m in the summer

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has claimed that Napoli would be willing to sell goalkeeper Alex Meret to Tottenham if the Premier League club present a decent offer for the 25-year-old in the summer.

Tottenham’s interest in Meret came to light earlier this week when La Repubblica (as relayed by Calcio Napoli 24) claimed that the North London club had identified the Italian as a potential replacement for Lloris.

However, the report suggested that Antonio Conte’s men would have their work cut out in signing the Napoli number one as he wants to put pen to paper on a new contract at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Subsequently, Meret’s agent Federico Pastorello confirmed to Sportitalia that his client is in talks with Napoli over a new deal but also revealed that the player is attracting interest from England.

Venerato has now talked up the chances of the Napoli number one moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, claiming that Luciano Spelleti’s men would cash in if they receive an offer of around €30m (£26.4m) for the goalkeeper in the summer.

The journalist said on the 1 Football Club program on 1 Station Radio (as relayed by Tutto Napoli): “In recent days, Meret’s agent has revealed that there are English clubs interested in the boy, namely Tottenham. Should an important offer ever arrive in the summer, I don’t exclude that Alex could also leave.

“Maybe Napoli have signed Gollini also in view of the possible Caprile operation with Bari. Up until two years ago, Pierluigi was considered one of the most important goalkeepers.

“Even if Napoli’s intention is to renew Meret’s contract, trying to satisfy his requests as far as possible. Napoli always have the threat there, because the contract expires in 2024, but within it, they have a unilateral option to extend it until 2025.

“Should Tottenham, however, have a proposal of €30m, we could even think of selling Alex.”

Unless Meret agrees to sign a new contract with Napoli, the Serie A club will have to cash in on him in the summer to avoid losing him on a fee. So, Tottenham will likely find out over the coming weeks whether the 25-year-old will be in the shop window at the end of the season.
