Journalist predicts Spurs will be ‘seriously looking at’ 30-year-old this summer

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are expected to ‘seriously’ consider an approach for Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij in the summer.

De Vrij’s thrived in the central sweeper role in Antonio Conte’s back three at Inter Milan, with the Dutchman’s solid performances being a crucial reason behind the Nerrazuri’s title triumph last season.

Fc Inter News claimed last month that Tottenham had made their intentions known about landing the experienced defender when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

This was backed up by Inter Live, who reported two weeks ago that Conte was keen on reuniting with the 30-year-old at Spurs and had personally asked the North London club’s hierarchy to swoop for the centre-back.

Jones believes that De Vrij could have a lot to offer Tottenham despite coming towards the latter part of his career and insisted the Inter star will be one of the names on the Lilywhites’ radar.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “I think right now, looking to the next 18 months, two years, they’ll be seriously looking at de Vrij. He’s still got all the traits to be a top defender in the Premier League.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not convinced that De Vrij would be a top target for Spurs, considering that Eric Dier has thrived in the central sweeper role. I expect us to prioritise a move for young, up and coming defender like Sven Botman, who is ideally suited to playing as a left-sided centre-back in a back three.
