Journalist predicts Spurs will still ‘go big’ on a new centre-back – But not this summer

The Daily Express’ Ryan Taylor has claimed that Tottenham did consider a move for Villarreal’s Pau Torres, but will likely go big on a different centre-back in a future window instead.

Tottenham reportedly tabled an offer worth £55m for Torres last summer but the defender decided to stay put at Villarreal (Marca).

The 25-year-old was one of several left-sided centre-backs who was said to be on Tottenham’s radar earlier this summer (Football.London).

It was even mooted back in June that the North London club were willing to use Giovani Lo Celso as a makeweight in a deal to sign the Villarreal star (Daily Mail).

However, Antonio Conte’s men eventually snapped up Clement Lenglet, who joined the club on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with the Frenchman expected to compete with Ben Davies for the left centre-back role this season.

Taylor has now stated that he does not expect Spurs to add more reinforcements to their backline before the transfer window closes but suggested that the Lilywhites might go after a big-name centre-back in future windows.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I still think Tottenham might go big on a centre-back, not in this window but windows to come.

“At the moment there isn’t really anyone out there that stands out. I know they’ve looked at Pau Torres but they would have done that deal by now if they wanted to.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that we made an offer for Torres last summer is evidence that Paratici is a fan of the Spaniard but I suspect Conte might have had doubts over how the 25-year-old would cope with the physicality of the Premier League.

I also think that Conte’s keenness to reignite the pursuit of Alessandro Bastoni next summer (or in January) might have eventually played a part in the club’s decision to sign Lenglet on a season-long loan deal.
