Journalist Dean Jones believes Tottenham Hotspur have the edge in the race for James Maddison, revealing that the North London club are now trying to hammer out a deal that suits all parties.
It was reported by The Telegraph earlier this month that Maddison has been made the ‘priority target’ by Ange Postecoglou, with Leicester City said to value the attacking midfielder at £50m.
It has been reported by multiple outlets that Newcastle United are also keen on the Foxes star, with Sky Sports even stating last week that the Magpies have moved into pole position ahead of Tottenham in the race for the player.
However, this information was subsequently contradicted by journalist Alex Crook (talkSPORT Breakfast – 14/06 at 9:50 am), who said it was Spurs who were at the front of the queue for the 26-year-old.
He explained that, much to the surprise of Newcastle, Maddison prefers a move to North London even though Eddie Howe’s men could offer him Champions League football.
Spurs are dialling in on a deal for James Maddison
Jones has now also installed Spurs as the favourites to snap up the England international, explaining that the Lilywhites are now in talks to get a deal over the line.
When asked about the race for Maddison’s signature, he told GiveMeSport: “I mean, I actually do give Tottenham the edge here.
“They have really good lines of communication open on this one and they’re dialling in on how a deal can open up in a way that suits everyone.
“It’s not the most important position for Tottenham to sort out. We know that they need defenders and a goalkeeper, but James Maddison is a player that they like.”

It does appear as if Maddison and Raya are the two targets that Tottenham are prioritising.
If we can get deals for those two players over the line along with a quality left-sided centre-back such as Aymeric Laporte before we fly out to Asia for pre-season, that would be of immense help to Postecoglou.
