Journalist provides potential boost to Spurs’ chances of landing midfielder

According to Goal journalist Neil Jones, Liverpool are not expected to get involved in the race for Tottenham target Manuel Ugarte this summer.

Ugarte is one of the most sought-after talents from the Portuguese top flight, having impressed not just in Primeira Liga but also in the Europa League and the Champions League this season.

The 22-year-old delivered two impressive displays against Tottenham earlier this season in the group stages of the Champions League, and unsurprisingly, the North Londoners are thought to be keeping a close eye on him ahead of the summer transfer window.

In fact, O Jogo (29/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) claimed recently that Spurs are expected to push ahead with an offer for Ugarte once the club have a new head coach in place, with the midfielder said to have a release clause of €60m (£52.6m) in his current contract.

It has since emerged that Liverpool had also entered the race for the Uruguayan’s signature, with Record even claiming last week that the Reds had moved into pole position to snap up the player.

However, if Jones’ latest update is to be believed, Jurgen Klopp’s men have no intention of making a move for the Sporting star.

The journalist took to social media to assert that despite the recent reports suggesting the contrary, Ugarte is not one of the midfielders on Liverpool’s shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window.

There is no doubt that Tottenham need reinforcements in the middle of the park, particularly since Bentancur is not expected to be back in action until November.

However, it is too early to be speculating on potential transfer targets, given that we are yet to appoint a sporting director or a head coach.
