Journalist provides update on Giovani Lo Celso after Maddison injury at Spurs

According to journalist Ryan Taylor, Giovani Lo Celso is expected to look to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the near future, as he searches for regular first team football.

Lo Celso joined Spurs in the summer of 2020, but has failed to hold down a starting berth in the Lilywhites team over the years, regardless of who has been in charge.

An extended loan spell with Villarreal over the last two seasons has helped to raise the midfielder’s stock once more, and it was hoped Ange Postecoglou could be the catalyst for Lo Celso finally finding his feet at Spurs.

The Australian decided to keep Lo Celso in his squad this season rather than offloading him in the summer, but he has played just 83 minutes of football across four appearances this term (Transfermarkt).

Will Giovani Lo Celso leave Spurs?

It is thought the injury to James Maddison could open the door somewhat for Lo Celso, but competition for places is fierce, with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr, and Rodrigo Bentancur all pressing for a starting place in the team.

Now, Ryan Taylor reckons Lo Celso will run out of patience and look to leave the club. He told The Spurs Chat Podcast: “Postecoglou was actually a key driving force behind [Lo Celso] staying at the club this summer. But it just hasn’t worked out for him because Bissouma and Sarr have been so good.”

He added: “Obviously Maddison is probably the player that Lo Celso would take the position of if he was to get into the starting XI. He’s sort of halfway between an eight and a 10 really. I expect Lo Celso to probably leave now, I really do.

“I think he needs to play regular football and obviously he’s struggled to stay fit. I just don’t think it’s going to work out at Spurs, unfortunately, which is a shame as he was a top player when they brought him to the club.”

I think this next month or so will be crucial in deciding a lot of players’ futures, and Lo Celso is definitely one of them. The only thing that could stop him from leaving is if he starts playing regularly, or if Postecoglou feels he can’t let him go due to injuries and the African Cup of Nations taking Bissouma and Sarr away.
