Journalist provides update on Josko Gvardiol contract situation amidst Spurs links

Sport 1 journalist Patrick Berger has revealed that Chelsea have stepped their pursuit of rumoured Tottenham target Josko Gvardiol, with Thomas Tuchel even said to have made a phone call to the RB Leipzig star a few days ago.

Earlier this summer, reports indicated that Gvardiol was one of Tottenham’s top targets for the left centre-back role (Football.London) but Antonio Conte’s men eventually ended up snapping up Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan deal instead.

The Athletic subsequently revealed that while the Croat was at the top of Spurs’ wishlist, the North London club were put off by Leipzig’s excessive asking price for the 20-year-old.

Berger has now taken to social media to reveal that Tottenham’s London rivals Chelsea are looking to bring Gvardiol to Stamford Bridge this summer. However, he added that Leipzig are holding firm and are not willing to let the centre-back leave the Red Bull Arena.

Meanwhile, SportBild’s Christian Falk has revealed that the Bundesliga club are now trying to tie Gvardiol down to a new contract to ward off interest from Premier League clubs.

Spurs Web Opinion

It looks like Spurs made a smart judgement call on Gvardiol earlier this window as they quickly realised that Leipzig are not open to negotiating for the centre-back this window.

I believe the reason the club decided to sign Lenglet on loan is perhaps to keep open the option of reigniting their interest in Bastoni or Gvardiol next summer.
