Journalist provides updates on futures of both Ndombele and Vertonghen

Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Jan Vertonghen has agreed on a deal to join Benfica ahead of the new season.

Vertonghen will surely go down as one of the greatest centre-halves Spurs have had in recent history as the Belgian was a rock at the back for Lillywhites for the best part of eight seasons at the club.

Some Spurs fans were quite emotional when the club announced that the 33-year-old be leaving, insisting that he the former Ajax man will go down as a legend despite not winning any silverware during his time in North London.

The question of what Vertonghen’s next club will be is one that has been discussed extensively over the past few months, with multiple reports indicating that several Serie A clubs are after his signature (Calcio Mercato).

However, it looks like the experienced defender is going to end up in Benfica. Romano insisted that the former Spurs star will sign a contract with the Portuguese giants in the coming hours.

The Italian also revealed that there has been no progress in talks between Inter Milan and Tottenham on Tanguy Ndombele, with the Nerazzurri currently focussing on their Europa League campaign.

However, he insisted that the Italian side would be back in talks following the conclusion of their trophy charge.

Spurs Web Opinion

Benfica will be a great adventure for Jan and a move that will suit him as the Lisbon-giants usually tend to dominate possession and territory in games. The 33-year-old is also likely to be first-choice at Benfica for the majority of his three-year contract if he stays fit, which might not have been the case at Roma or Inter. As for Ndombele, I just can’t see him leaving.
