Journalist questions whether defender has the belief to join Tottenham this summer

Journalist Dean Jones believes there is logic to the rumours about Tottenham’s interest in re-signing Kyle Walker-Peters but he questioned whether the right-back would have enough self-belief to return to N17.

It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that Ange Postecoglou wants to add suitable cover in the full-back positions this summer.

The latest to carry that information was talkSPORT, who said last week that the Lilywhties are plotting a move to bring Walker-Peters back to the club.

The outlet claimed that the 27-year-old fits the profile of attack-minded full-back that Postecoglou wants to add to his squad.

The publication also added that since the England international only has a year left on his contract at St Mary’s, Southampton would be forced to sell him if they do not win promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs.

Should Spurs look to re-sign Kyle Walker-Peters?

Jones believes that Tottenham’s lack of homegrown numbers makes Walker-Peters a very attractive target for the North London side this summer.

When asked about the rumours linking the Saints star with a return to N17, he told GiveMeSport: “There is definitely something interesting in the rumours about Spurs targeting Kyle Walker-Peters for the summer window, and the reason I am taking it seriously is because of this need they have for homegrown or home-trained players.

“When you look at Spurs’ squad, if they are going to develop as a serious European side, they need to get depth in there that fills all the criteria needed for an elite modern-day squad build. At the moment, they don’t have that, but bringing players like Walker-Peters back into the building really could be seen as a good idea.

“The big question would then need to be answered by the player. Is he happy to be back at the club to tick boxes? Would he believe in himself enough to join for that reason but then actually push for a place in the team?”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Walker-Peters will tick a few boxes for Spurs but if I were in his position, I would not be too keen on returning to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The reality is that the Saints star is not going to displace Pedro Porro from the starting eleven at N17. He is not going to have any shortage of suitors this summer and he would likely want to join a club where he is going to play regularly.
