Journalist recalls funny incident with cocky Ajax fan at half-time in semi-final with Spurs

Even the most optimistic of Spurs fans wouldn’t have given the Lilywhites much of a chance of progressing into the finals of Champions League at half-time against Ajax.

Tottenham found themselves trailing 3-0 on aggregate against the Dutch side at half-time in the semi-final second leg.

The home side were playing some terrific football and it looked as if Spurs were all but out of the competition after their heroic displays against Man City.

The home crowd at the Johan Cruyff Arena broke into a rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘Don’t Worry About A Thing’ during the interval and it certainly didn’t seem as if they harboured any fear of failing to progress.

However, what happened in the second half will be etched in the memories of Spurs fans for a lifetime.

A sensational hat-trick from Lucas Moura, which included a stoppage-time winner, sent Tottenham to Madrid and dumped Ajax out of the competition.

PA Sport journalist, Jonathan Veal, has revealed that one Ajax fan was so confident that he had already booked his flights to Madrid at half-time.

Spurs Web Opinion

There are a few who are suggesting that Tottenham’s comeback was ‘lucky’, which is extremely unfair on the Spurs players. They left everything out on the field in the second half and never looked like they were going to give up. The belief the players showed was commendable given that the whole world seemed to think the game was over.
