Journalist reports Spurs are ‘above all’ in the race for 25-year-old Serie A star

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has reported that Tottenham Hotspur are currently leading the race to sign Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Tottenham are expected to sign a successor to Hugo Lloris in the summer, with a whole host of goalkeepers being linked with a move to the North London club over recent months (Daily Mail).

In his most recent article on that matter for Football.London, Alasdair Gold did not mention Meret as one of the options that Spurs could turn to.

Instead, the journalist named Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili, Brentford’s David Raya, Brighton’s Robert Sanchez and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan as the four names on the top of the Lilywhites’ wishlist.

However, Italian publications have reported on the possibility of Meret joining Spurs, with La Repubblica (via Calcio Napoli 24) claiming back in January that Antonio Conte’s men are monitoring the Napoli number one.

Venerato has now suggested that Tottenham are the ones who have shown the most interest in the 25-year-old goalkeeper so far.

The journalist told 1 Station Radio (28/02/23 as relayed by Calcio Napoli 24 and SportWitness): “Napoli would like to continue with Meret, and in this sense, we will have to sit down at the negotiating table and await developments.

“There are some Premier League clubs that have however registered an interest in the Friulian, Tottenham above all. In the event of a separation, which Spalletti and the club do not wish for, the Azzurri would turn to Vicario.”

The sources of all the speculation linking Meret with a move to Spurs, suggest that it is coming from the player’s end rather than from people inside the North London club.

The goalkeeper’s entourage might be feeding these reports to the press to put pressure on Napoli during the contract negotiations.
