Journalist reports Spurs have contacted Napoli star about potential transfer

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have spoken to Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret regarding a potential switch to North London.

Hugo Lloris’ performances this season have left a lot to be desired and multiple outlets have reported over the last few months that Spurs plan on replacing the Frenchman at the end of the season (Daily Mail).

One of the names thought to be on Tottenham’s radar is Meret, with La Repubblica (as relayed by Calcio Napoli 24) reporting two weeks ago that the Lilywhites were eyeing a potential move for the Napoli number one.

The report suggested, however, that the goalkeeper plans on extending his current contract at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, which runs until 2024 (Transfermarkt).

Meret’s agent Federico Pastorello subsequently confirmed to Sportitalia that he is in talks with Napoli regarding a new deal for his client and also revealed that the Italian shot-stopper was of interest to some Premier League clubs.

Venerato has now provided an update on Meret’s contract situation and on Tottenham’s interest in the 25-year-old.

The journalist told on 1 Station Radio’s program, 1 Football Club (01/02/23 as relayed by Tutto Napoli and SportWitness): “Meret’s future? There is no news.

“Meeting with the agent, Pastorello, at the end of the season, so we will understand if there will be a need to renew or go elsewhere. Tottenham are interested in the boy, a club that has also contacted the boy’s entourage in this market.”

Venerato also revealed that Napoli had already identified a replacement for Meret if he leaves the club.

He added: “[Guglielmo] Vicario as Alex’s possible successor. The Caprile option, on the other hand, will depend on Gollini’s future redemption, and will cover the deputy goalkeeper of Meret or Vicario.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The likes of Meret, Jordan Pickford and David Raya will all be down to the final year of their contracts in the summer unless they put pen to paper on a new deal. I suspect that Pickford will be Tottenham’s top target but the competition for the Everton number one could heat up as Chelsea and Man Utd could also be in the market for a new goalkeeper.
