Journalist reports that Spurs failed with an attempt to sign Chelsea star

According to London World journalist Rahman Osman, Tottenham Hotspur failed with an attempt to snap up N’Golo Kante on a free transfer.

Kante’s current deal runs out in June and Foot Mercato reported a few months ago that Spurs had made contact with the mdifielder amidst Chelsea’s unwillingness to offer him a new deal.

The report added that the World Cup winner preferred to remain in London, which could have been an advantage to the likes of Tottenham and their North London rivals, Arsenal, who were also credited with an interest in the player.

However, the former Leicester City man is now expected to sign a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, with The Telegraph reporting last week that the two parties are edging close to an agreement and that the Blues are confident the experienced midfielder will sign on the dotted line.

The same information has now been confirmed by Osman, who took to social media to state that it is only a matter of time before Chelsea announce Kante’s contract extension.

The journalist added that Spurs attempted to snap up the 31-year-old, with Antonio Conte said to be a fan of the France international.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not surprised that Tottenham tested the waters to see if a deal for Kante would be possible but I never thought the midfielder was a realistic target for us.

Even if he did not agree to a new contract, the 31-year-old would have not wanted to anger the Chelsea fans by moving to Spurs.
