Journalist reports what some at Spurs feel about potential Pochettino return

Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that some at Tottenham feel that Mauricio Pochettino would be even more motivated to go one step further and win trophies should he return to the club for a second spell.

Recent reports regarding Antonio Conte’s future at Tottenham have not been particularly encouraging, with The Athletic claiming last week that some sources close to key figures at Spurs are now less optimistic that the Italian will sign a new contract than they were a few months ago.

However, Alasdair Gold assuaged Spurs fans’ fears by stating on his YouTube channel over the weekend that Conte has a history of driving a hard bargain and that the Tottenham hierarchy are still hopeful he could commit his future to the club.

If the 53-year-old does walk away from Tottenham anytime soon, Pochettino is the man the club are likely to turn to, with 90 min claiming earlier this month that the Argentine has many admirers at the club and he still believes he has unfinished business in North London.

When asked about Pochettino potentially returning to Spurs, Jones has now told GiveMeSport: “Pochettino is still highly regarded at the club, there’s no doubt about that.

“There’s even a feeling within some at Tottenham that if he did come back, he might have an added edge to him, even a bit more bite and motivation to go one step further than he did last time. He set a new standard at Tottenham when he was there and it was very hard to get back to that moment.”

I think it is quite possible that the Tottenham hierarchy are feeding the Pochettino speculation to the media to strengthen their bargaining position and send a message to Conte that they have an alternative should the Italian fail to make any concessions.

However, it is fairly clear that Conte does have the backing of Levy and I believe that the club will do their utmost to tie the Italian down to a new deal.
