Journalist reveals Atletico have made Carrasco transfer decision amidst Spurs approach

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Atletico Madrid have decided to hold on to Yannick Carrasco until the summer amidst Tottenham’s approach for the wide-man.

The Evening Standard revealed on their live transfer blog today (31/01/22 at 9:40 am) that Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancour might not be the only two players to arrive through the door at Spurs on deadline day.

It was suggested that Conte’s men could still push ahead with one more ‘eleventh-hour’ signing, with a right wing-back and a striker alleged to be at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist.

One of the players thought to be on Tottenham’s radar is Carrasco, with Foot Mercato reporting earlier today that Spurs had initiated talks with Atletico over the Belgian and are even prepared to meet the player’s €60m (£49.9m) release clause.

Ornstein has now confirmed that Spurs have made a late approach for Carrasco. However, he has stated that the North London club have ‘no chance’ of signing the 28-year-old as his release clause has now expired.

He further added that Diego Simeone’s side have no intention of letting the winger leave mid-season.

Spurs Web Opinion

If it is true that Tottenham were even prepared to pay Carrasco’s release clause, that suggests that the club are desperate to bring a right wing-back in before the transfer deadline.

So, we could potentially see approaches from Spurs for other players. However, I do wonder if Paratici might decide to put off the pursuit until the summer since he has not been able to bring in his preferred targets in Traore and Carrasco.
