Journalist reveals how FA Cup Final will still determine Spurs’ Europa League journey

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed their European status today by seeing out a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, thanks partly to a Chelsea 2-0 win over Wolves.

Spurs finished the season in sixth position, one of the automatic Europa League spots, meaning that they can no longer have their place taken from them.

If the club had finished in seventh, an FA Cup final win for Arsenal would have seen the Gunners qualify for the Europa League over Spurs.

However, Dan Kilpatrick has now revealed that the final will still determine Tottenham’s qualifying route in Europe next season.

If Chelsea win the FA Cup, Spurs will go straight into the group stage of the Europa League. If Arsenal win, Tottenham will be forced to enter the second qualifying round, a one-leg play-off against another team on September 17.

Of course, Jose Mourinho and his team will be hoping to slot straight into the group stages rather than risking an extra fixture and the chance of being knocked out early.
