Journalist reveals Nuno is ‘a big fan’ of 21-year-old Spurs player

According to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is ‘a big fan’ of Ryan Sessegnon.

The 21-year-old made the move to North London from Fulham in 2019 but has endured a fairly tough go at it from the off.

The England U21 international has been held back by a number of injuries and inconsistency when actually given the chance on the pitch, which has ultimately hindered his short career in N17.

Sessegnon spent last season on loan at Hoffenheim and managed to rekindle some of his past form, playing 23 games in the Bundesliga, scoring twice and assisting three more.

He arrived back at Spurs this season carrying another injury and never got a chance under Nuno during pre-season, but Gold claims the Portuguese manager has taken a liking to Sessegnon as he tries to break into the starting lineup.

Speaking on the Gold and Guest talk Tottenham podcast, he said: “Ryan Sessegnon, he’s just had a mare hasn’t he?

“He came back from his Hoffenheim loan ready to prove himself, and he picked up a hamstring injury, then he got a few minutes in the European games, before going on England U21 duty where he picked up a knock and he’s had to come back.

“A little bit like Matt Doherty, he’s probably third-choice now in that left-back spot, but what works in his favour is that Nuno is a big fan of his.

“He tried to sign him twice at Wolves, but the key is to find the best position to him, is he a left-back? Or is he better as a winger? I really like Sessegnon, he’s a great young player with a lot of attributes.”

It would be an understatement to say Sessegnon has had a bit of a rubbish time since joining Spurs two years ago, especially as he carried that £25 million price tag with him.

But it’s good that Nuno is keen on him which can go a long way for him to get some confidence back and hopefully more minutes as the season progresses.
