Journalist reveals PL club considered trying to get Pochettino this season

The Athletic’s Paul Taylor has revealed that Nottingham Forest wanted Mauricio Pochettino to replace Steve Cooper at the helm.

Pochettino has been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, following 18 months in charge of the Ligue 1 club.

The Argentine, who spent five and a half years at Tottenham, before being replaced by Jose Mourinho back in 2019, has been linked with the Nice job over recent weeks.

ESPN reported last month that the former Spurs boss was the Ligue 1 club’s number one target and that they had held talks with his entourage about replacing Lucien Favre.

Pochettino’s name has also been mooted for a couple of Premier League jobs, including the Aston Villa one (Football Insider) and the Leicester City one (Leicester Mercury).

Forest offered Cooper a new contract last week but Taylor has now revealed that the Midlands club did consider some options to replace the 42-year-old, including Pochettino and former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

Taylor said on The Athletic Football Podcast: “They (Forest) did sound out possible replacements for Cooper. They were thinking about people like Pochettino and Tuchel, which was very ambitious. It became very clear, very quickly that they were unrealistic.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Pochettino should take over a mid-sized club, just because of his keenness to return to the Premier League. The Argentine’s CV is good enough to get a much bigger job than the likes of Villa or Leicester.

It will be in his best interest to play the waiting game as he and Tuchel will be the first two names that any big club, like Juventus or Bayern, would consider if they want a change of manager.
