Journalist reveals player is putting in extra work in a bid to convince Antonio Conte

Emerson Royal is undertaking extra work at Tottenham’s Hotspur Way training facility in a bid to convince Antonio Conte he is the right player to fill the wing-back role, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Royal has started all but one of Tottenham’s eight Premier League games this season but must now serve a three-match suspension following his red card in the north London derby defeat at Arsenal last weekend (transfermarkt).

Conte admitted in the build-up to Tuesday night’s Champions League match at Eintract Frankfurt that he decides to pick the best team after overlooking both Matt Doherty and Djed Spence for selection (BBC).

The Italian will be forced into a change for tomorrow evening’s match at Brighton and Hove Albion and must decide whether to bring in Doherty or Spence, or even move across Ivan Perisic to the right flank.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “I think that his situation is probably assessed more on the outside than it is on the inside.

“I know that there are players who it looks like are obvious candidates to play there instead of him and, maybe for his sake, it’s lucky that the fans don’t pick the team.

“But, from everything I hear, Emerson Royal puts in a lot of extra work behind the scenes to convince Conte that he can be the player he’s looking for in that role.”

Emerson is a good athlete but just does not have any creative output to his game and it seems impossible that despite the amount of coaching and analysis he gets, there is no sign of improvement in terms of his vision or ability to deliver dangerous balls into the penalty area.
