Journalist reveals Spurs are eyeing Man Utd defender who Conte is a fan of

Duncan Castles has reported that Tottenham Hotspur could go after Manchester United centre-back Eric Bailly during the January transfer window.

Castles said on the latest episode of the transfer window podcast (starting at 34:37) that Conte was promised by Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici the club would spend a significant amount in January.

The Italian was allegedly also assured that Spurs would then spend big in the summer in order to give themselves a chance of competing for the title next season.

Castles revealed that Conte has asked the North London club to bring in two starting central defenders in January.

The journalist said the 52-year-old feels that signing two new top centre-backs is fundamental for his system to work properly.

Bailly is said to be one of the options Tottenham are looking at, with Conte alleged to be a big fan of the Ivory Coast international, having previously tried to take him to Inter Milan.

Castles explained that Bailly was unhappy with the lack of game time he was getting under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but that the 27-year-old’s exit from Old Trafford is not so straightforward now that the Norwegian has departed.

I have never been completely convinced by Bailly as he always seems to have a mistake in him. Like Davinson Sanchez, there is no doubt that the Ivorian is a very talented defender but just like the Colombian, he is not someone that can be counted upon to keep clean sheets consistently.
