Journalist reveals Spurs have not yet made decision on 30-year-old’s future

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham have not yet decided whether they will part with Lucas Moura next summer.

Moura’s only two appearances so far this season came in Tottenham’s first two matches against Southampton and Chelsea, with the Brazilian sidelined since the end of August with a calf injury (Transfermarkt).

Aston Villa (The Telegraph) and Newcastle United (Football Insider) were credited with an interest in the 30-year-old on transfer deadline day but the winger ended up staying put at the North London club.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold had previously revealed that although Moura’s contract at Spurs runs out in 2023, the Lilywhites have the option to extend it by another 12 months.

Reports from Brazil over recent weeks (UOL) have claimed that the former Paris Saint-Germain star could return to his boyhood club Sao Paulo next summer on a free transfer.

Romano has now revealed that Spurs never considered letting Moura leave this summer and that the club are yet to make a decision on the winger’s contract.

The journalist told CaughtOffside: “Despite reports to the contrary, Lucas Moura has never been close to joining Aston Villa. Newcastle were interested this summer but there was never an advanced negotiation with Tottenham.

“I think Lucas may have the chance to leave Spurs as a free agent but it will depend on how his performances go this season, the club has not yet decided.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think this will most likely be Lucas’ last season at Tottenham. If the winger wants to return to Sao Paulo on a free transfer, I suspect Spurs will honour his wishes and opt against taking the option to extend his deal by another 12 months.
