Journalist reveals Spurs were Pochettino’s second choice this summer

Duncan Castles has now revealed that Mauricio Pochettino would have chosen a move to Real Madrid over Tottenham this summer if he had been given the choice.

The journalist claimed that the Argentine was speaking to both Spurs and Los Blancos this summer, even telling both clubs that he wanted to join.

However, PSG took matters into their own hands amidst rumours of a Pochettino exit, extending his contract for an extra 12 months and thus making him more expensive to land for Spurs or Madrid.

Castles told the Transfer Window Podcast that if Pochettino had been offered both jobs, he would have opted for a move to Madrid over a return to North London.

He said: “They also talked to Mauricio Pochettino because of his unhappiness at PSG.

“They tried to convince him to come back, and Pochettino encouraged them in that, although simultaneously he was also talking to Real Madrid and telling Real Madrid he wanted to come there.

“I understand he would have chosen Real Madrid over Tottenham if he had been offered both jobs and if PSG hadn’t stepped in to extend his contract and make him too expensive for the two clubs.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Pochettino would have probably been just the unifying figure that the Spurs fans, players and board needed this summer, but it clearly wasn’t to be. I still think that Levy is looking for a short one or two-year stop-gap manager before he brings Poch back.
