Journalist reveals Spurs will break 32 month record with PL season opener vs Southampton

Tottenham’s opening Premier League game of the season against Southampton is set to be the club’s first Saturday 3 pm kick-off at home since December 2019, according to PA Sport journalist Jonathan Veal.

All 20 clubs in the English top flight found out the extent of their schedules on Thursday ahead of an abnormal season split in half by this year’s World Cup in Qatar (Premier League).

Spurs, looking to start strong in their first full season under Antonio Conte, are set to begin proceedings by hosting Southampton on a slightly earlier than usual opening weekend.

The N17-based side then face a London derby at Chelsea a week later before welcoming Wolves to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But Tottenham’s opening encounter against the Saints, who earned a late 3-2 win in the exact fixture last term, is accompanied by a quirky statistic given the game’s date and kick-off time.

Veal has pointed out that the fixture, which is scheduled for August 6, is set to be the club’s first 3 pm match at home on a Saturday since December 2019 – over two-and-a-half years ago.

Spurs’ last such fixture came on December 7 when they welcomed Burnley to north London and secured a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

This is a pretty cool but strange statistic but it is nice that Tottenham supporters will finally get to enjoy a traditional fixture time.

It also shows how Spurs’ schedule in recent seasons has been massively changed as their European participation will have impacted it.
