Journalist reveals stumbling block in Tottenham pursuit of Benfica’s Ruben Dias

Football.London’s Rob Guest has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur face an uphill battle in trying to sign Ruben Dias before the transfer window closes.

Spurs have done some excellent transfer business so far this window but the club are still reportedly after a centre-back and a striker (Evening Standard).

Dias is one of the players who is said to be on Tottenham’s radar, with reports indicating that the Lilywhites could make another approach for the central defender this summer after seeing a bid for him turned down in January.

However, Guest has now revealed that the centre-half’s price tag may make the deal difficult for the North Londoners to complete.

The journalist claimed that Benfica’s asking price is likely to be significantly lower than Dias’ £80 million release clause and that the Lilywhites are trying to drive the price down.

Guest insisted that Spurs would need to raise a lot of money through player sales to sign the defender and added that signing a striker is the bigger priority for the Lilywhites at the moment.

Spurs Web Opinion

After the significant investment that has been made into the squad this window (considering the financial circumstances post-COVID), I do not expect us to spend more than £20m or £30m either on a striker or a centre-back. However, a lot could depend on which fringe players we are able to sell and how much we end up getting for them.
