Journalist reveals Tottenham’s long-term plan for Ryan Sessegnon after loan spell

It did not come as much of a surprise to see Ryan Sessegnon being loaned out by Tottenham Hotspur on the back of his struggles for game time last season.

The 20-year-old, who fell further down the pecking order with the arrival of Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid, completed a season-long loan move to Hoffenheim, where he will be hoping to get more games under his belt.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now explained Tottenham’s main thinking behind loaning the youngster out and what the club expect of him in the future.

He claims that Sessegnon is rated highly by Jose Mourinho, who believes he could evolve into a top left-back in the years to come.

Spurs are thus said to have turned down several loan offers for the youngster from Premier League clubs and those abroad as they wanted to send him somewhere he would get regular minutes as a left-back or as a wing-back.

Gold claims that the Spurs boss is hopeful Sessegnon will return from his loan spell in the Bundesliga with more confidence under his belt and can then challenge Reguilon for the left-back role at Tottenham.

The last thing that Sessegnon needs on the back of the disappointing season he had last time out was to go somewhere where he is not first-choice. I would not be surprised if there was a requirement as part of his loan contract that he would have to play a minimum number of matches for Hoffenheim this season.
