Journalist reveals two centre-backs he thinks are in ‘pole position’ for Spurs now this summer

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Daily Star journalist Paul Brown has claimed that Stefan de Vrij and Pau Torres look to be the two centre-backs in pole position for Tottenham now this summer.

Whilst Fabio Paratici has already addressed a number of problem areas in Antonio Conte’s squad, it is believed that the Italian coach next wants to add reinforcements to the left side of his back-three (Mirror).

De Vrij is a player that Conte knows all about. The Dutchman made 88 appearances under Conte at Inter Milan, contributing an impressive five goals and five assists in their time together (TransferMarkt).

Out of contract in 2023, the 30-year-old is reportedly priced at just £15 million by Inter, alerting the Premier League trio of Spurs, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United (Football Insider).

The Daily Mail also claim that Spurs are looking to grab Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres this summer, with Giovani Lo Celso potentially going the other way as part of the exchange.

Torres played every minute of his side’s run to last season’s Champions League semi-final (TransferMarkt), also impressing for Unai Emery’s side in La Liga.

Browne claims that these two options currently look the most likely for the Lilywhites.

He said (GiveMeSport): “In terms of defenders, there is still de Vrij at Inter – who Conte is a big fan of – and also Pau Torres, I think, is someone they’ve liked for a long time.

“Those two would look to be in pole position, but there’s plenty of names and I think a few more might crop up in the next few weeks.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would personally be buzzing if Spurs managed to get these two deals done. Torres is a classy player with the ball at his feet who would provide perfect competition for Ben Davies in the left-sided role.

Whilst de Vrij is the perfect battle-hardened all-rounder for the central role to ensure that Eric Dier maintains his upward trajectory and is not caught resting on his laurels.
