Journalist reveals what his Spurs sources have said about latest Luis Campos rumours

A lot has been written about the possibility of Luis Campos moving to Tottenham Hotspur of late after it was reported that he asked to leave his position at Lille (RMC SPORT).

It was initially suggested that Campos’ move to Tottenham was practically a done deal (RTP). However, multiple reports since have indicated that the 55-year-old wants to stay at Lille despite disagreements over recent strategic decisions (Record via Sport Witness).

The Lille man is said to have also rejected a lucrative offer from Newcastle to be the club’s next sporting director (L’Equipe via GFFN).

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now revealed that his sources from within Tottenham, as well as Jose Mourinho’s camp, were both quick to deny that Campos was North London bound.

He claimed that he would not rule out the prospect of the former Real Madrid man reuniting with Mourinho at Spurs but insisted that he is likely to stay at Lille for now.

Gold said: “As soon as the stories broke in France about Luis Campos heading to Spurs, those within Tottenham and Mourinho’s camp quickly made it very clear it wasn’t true.

“There’s no doubting that the north London club would like to bring in Campos – most top clubs in the Europe would – however he would have to leave Lille first and there are now doubts that he even asked to leave the Ligue 1 club and instead was just asking for some changes to be made.

“Mourinho and Campos are close friends, knowing each other from the Portuguese league and then working together at Real Madrid before the latter went on to become of the game’s best sporting directors.

“Campos would be perfect for Spurs and Daniel Levy with his ability to work to whatever budget set for him and find uncut gems for his clubs.

“However, nothing appears to be imminent about him arriving in north London and his contract with Lille is a slightly different one, in that it’s believed that the scouting company he runs has the three year deal with the French outfit.

“I wouldn’t bet against him coming to Spurs in the future, particularly as he has always said he would follow Mourinho anywhere, but he will be inundated with offers should he actually decided to leave Lille.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There have now been multiple reports that have hinted at the fact that Campos is merely putting pressure on Lille to change their strategic course of action and is still keen to continue at the Ligue 1 club. However, Spurs haven’t filled the sporting director role nor have they sought a replacement for John McDermott. So, it could be that they are still hoping to lure Campos to North London.
