Journalist reveals what Postecoglou really thinks of Emerson Royal in Spurs training

Journalist Tom Barclay has said that Ange Postecolgou loves the way the Emerson Royal trains and the right-back’s attitude.

Emerson has warmed the bench for much of the season and when he has played, he has been asked to operate out of position, filling in at centre-back earlier this season and now at left-back after the injuries to Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies.

The Brazilian looked out of his depth at Anfield, giving Mohamed Salah too much space in the final third and he was directly culpable for Liverpool’s opener, with the Egyptian ghosting behind him to meet a cross at the far post.

However, Ange Postecoglou refused to criticise the 25-year-old in his post-match press conference, pointing out that the former Real Betis man was playing out of position (Football.London).

However, the Brazilian has certainly come in for plenty of criticism from the media, with Roy Keane stating a couple of days ago that the right-back is simply not capable of smelling danger  (Sky Sports – 05/05 via TBR Football).

Postecoglou is a big fan of Emerson as a trainer

Barclay has now revealed that Spurs rejected a sizeable offer for Emerson in January as Postecoglou really values what the defender offers.

The journalist said on The Tottenham Way podcast about the right-back: “Spurs rejected a lot of money from a Saudi club back in January, all I know is they turned down £25 million for him, and you just wonder why really.

“I know Postecoglou loves him as a trainer and as a character and he has played in different positions, and he hasn’t been all bad by any stretch apart from the last couple of games, but you don’t really see how he fits with Postecoglou’s playing philosophy going forward.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is unfair to judge a player based on a couple of performances out of position, especially when he is coming in from the cold. Emerson has done well when he has had regular game time.

However, having said that, he is likely to be one of the players that Tottenham move on as part of their summer rebuild.
